Help Rescue Women and Children From Trafficking
Shreya’s mother left when she was six months old; her father was a chronic alcoholic. Amid unreliable parents and shifting homes, her paternal aunt was her only anchor. Her aunt cared for her for ten years and enrolled her in a hostel. When Shreya’s mother returned, her aunt bought them a house. Two years later, her mother removed her from school and moved her to Uttar Pradesh. Struggling, Shreya fled back to her aunt, who sheltered her. Later, her stepbrother attempted to assault her. Shreya ran to her maternal aunt, who deceived her into prostitution. Rescue Foundation saved her in 2018. Now safe, Shreya thrives, dreams of becoming a lawyer, and inspires others at the shelter.
Each year thousands of women and children are trafficked across the country and there are very few organizations working for them. However, our resolve to help them only grows stronger and with your support, we can keep making a difference
Leading the fight against trafficking
Over the years, Triveni Acharya, who is our president and a former journalist has courageously led efforts to rescue over 5,000 child trafficking victims through her organization, co-founded with her late husband, Balkrishna Acharya.
“When I first encountered the heartbreaking stories of these girls, I saw my daughter’s face in theirs. What if these girls were my daughters? Wouldn’t I fight to save them?” she says. Using investigators who go undercover in various areas, Rescue Foundation discovers where the girls are held and, with police assistance, conducts operations to rescue them.
Most of these rescued girls are from impoverished backgrounds, kidnapped from Nepal, Bangladesh or other Indian states and trafficked to cities’ notorious red-light districts to be sold into prostitution.
Give them A Second Chance
We help rescued girls start over in four care homes across the country and reunite them with their families. If their families won’t take them back, we provide shelter and support to rebuild their lives.
We offer legal help, education, counseling, free health care, and good nutrition. The girls also learn skills like tailoring, embroidery, and vocational training so they can support themselves and live independently.
A Growing Challenge
Regrettably, the number of trafficked girls has been rising over time, with last year reaching a three-year high despite the pandemic. This surge has compelled the organization to undertake more rescue operations and save more girls, necessitating an expansion of their home capacities.
“I’m as determined as ever to ensure these young girls have a chance at a better life. We must keep fighting, no matter what. But we need funds. We care for 500 women and children annually, and the numbers keep increasing. We need all the support we can get, and raising funds each year is one of the biggest challenges we face as these young girls now rely on us,” says Triveni Acharya.
These vulnerable young girls have endured lives of abuse and trauma at the hands of ruthless human traffickers. They don’t deserve that. Your small act of kindness can restore their hope in humanity and give them another chance at life
